Thirteen Montgomery County Public Libraries will welcome the Year of the Rat with a variety of programs in February and March marking the Lunar Year 4706. Music, dance and special performances will feature the sights, sounds and culture of Asia. Programs will include introduction to customs behind the Lunar New Year, traditional dances, hands-on art activities, puppet shows, healing and martial arts demonstrations including tai-chi and kung fu, calligraphy, crafts, Chinese yo-yo, workshops and children’s activities. Lunar New Year, which starts with the new moon on the first day of the New Year and ends on the full moon 15 days later, falls this year on February 7. It is an important celebration in the Asian culture as the symbol of spring festival. It is traditional to wear something red, the color that is meant to ward off evil spirits. Another custom is the Chinese lion dance that ushers in a year of good luck.
